Brits have been challenging themselves to complete a Year 6 SATs grammar test question - but it turns out they are pretty rusty.

In May 2024, Year 6 students will have done with SATs grammar tests, and their parents might have attempted to help them study. Many will have studied hard for their own exams at school back in the day, but how much of the information have you used since?

While you may more often than not reach for your calculator rather than do a long division by hand, there are certain things you learned at school which isn't needed in everyday life – such as grammar. Sarah, who goes by the username Grammar Slammer online and advises trainee primary teachers on the English National Curriculum's grammar content, has given older generations the chance to show off their skills.

In a recent TikTok, Sarah asked: "Can you answer this question from the Year 6 SATs grammar test? Add a prefix to the underlined word to make its antonym. Write the whole word in the box. Aisha had a very mature attitude to life."

In the comment section it was clear that many adults were baffled by the question, and several didn't get it right. One person wrote: "The way i confidently said unmature." Another commented: "I, the owner of a creative writing and English literature first class BA with Hons, said with far too much confidence 'premature'." A third said: "I'll be honest. No clue what a prefix is."

Luckily, Sarah was on hand to answer the question and provide the explanation. She said: "A prefix is a group of letters that we put at the beginning of another word to change the meaning of the word. For example, if I put 'un' at the beginning of 'happy', to make unhappy, then I've added a prefix and I've changed the meaning of the word.

"An antonym is a word that has the opposite meaning of another word. This question is asking us to put some letters at the front of 'mature' to make a word that means the opposite of mature." In this case, you need to ad 'im' at the front of the word mature, to make immature.
