Thomas Tuchel may have impressed the Football Association enough , but he is still despised by some at his former club .
has become the third foreign manager of the Three Lions after and technical director John McDermott. He will focus on trying to win the 2026 World Cup with England when he takes over the reins on January 1.
The 51-year-old is therefore unlikely to be too concerned by what is happening at Bayern, who at the end of the 2023/24 season after just 18 months. Tuchel won the Bundesliga in his first season at Bayern, but endured a difficult final campaign, missing out on the title to Bayer Leverkusen while failing in the cup competitions, despite having a star-studded squad which had won 11 successive titles.

He fell out with the club hierarchy, most notably president Uli Hoeness, who has not been shy in his criticism of the former boss. “He doesn’t think that you can improve [Aleksandar] Pavlovic, that you can improve [Alphonso] Davies,” Hoeness said earlier this year. “And when he thinks that you can’t get any further, he thinks you should just go and buy.”
Hoeness, who has been involved at Bayern since 1970 and is renowned for speaking his mind, opened up on his feelings towards Tuchel at a ‘Leadership Summit’ at the Allianz Arena, where Bayern bosses addressed employees. Hoeness reportedly said Tuchel was a “catastrophe” for the club and had single-handedly killed the “entertainment value” through his negative style of football.
In lavishing praise on his successor Vincent Kompany, who has Bayern joint-top, Hoeness aimed further digs at Tuchel. “Vincent Kompany is – and that cannot be said for sure after a few weeks – a godsend for Bayern Munich,” he said.
“He’s someone who has played football at a high level himself. He also has a great character in my opinion and sees football as work. He wants to make the individual players better, and that’s what he’s working on. Sometimes they train for two hours until they’re tired.
“So far I can only say good things. We’ve had six games, four of which were away games, and we are top of the table. The 3-3 in Frankfurt has nothing to do with Vincent Kompany’s aggressive style of play, but rather with us playing a one-two on the halfway line in the 93rd minute.
“The nice thing is that we’re playing well, he is playing entertaining football. Since he’s been there, I’ve really enjoyed going to the stadium again. It’s entertainment. We are all football fans. If you were in the stadium in Frankfurt and watched the game, you say: ‘Wow!’ And that’s what matters, that’s what we stand for.”
