BBC Strictly Come Dancing ageism row as stars 'furious' popular professional faces the axe

Send Push

As continues to wow on-screen, there is set to be behind the scenes, according to reports.

A number of the professional dancers on the hit series are said to be up for the chop once the 20th edition comes to an end. However, an ageism row is apparently brewing, with some of the longest serving dancers reportedly being axed.

Among them is the show's oldest professional, The 42-year-old Venezuelan-American star has been a mainstay on the series for 12 years, but faced an early exit alongside former footballer Paul Merson in the current series. And there are fears it could be the much-loved dancer's last outing.

A source told the potential axe has left other stars "furious". One told the publication it was "another Arlene Phillips" moment. Arlene was replaced as a judge on the show at the age of 65 in 2008, leading to claims of sexism and ageism. At the time, Arlene was replaced by series five winner Alesha Dixon, who was 30 at the time.

An insider told the outlet: "It is absolutely outrageous Karen would be booted off the show. She is absolutely committed, she is so fit, an amazing dancer and she has never cause Strictly any problems at all. While the show has been under so much scrutiny in the last nine months, none of it has involved her.

"She is a total pro, it all smacks of Arlene Phillips, get rid of the older woman and replace her with a younger one. She is such a safe pair of hands, she can be coupled with anyone and gives it her best. It would be devastating to for the BBC to get rid of the older women, you expect more from them."

Karen isn't the only more senior star who could be replaced, either, according to The Sun. The publication claims the likes of Ukrainian star Nadiya Bychkova and Welsh mover Katya Jones, both 35, could also be getting the boot. Younger stars such as Jowita Pryztal, 29, and Michelle Tsiakkas, also 29, are said to be safe, however.

A source told The Sun earlier in the week: "The feeling is that the Strictly troupe is made up of some fading stars, while others are rising stars. And in many cases there are certain characters whose shoes can easily be filled with younger, up-and-coming counterparts. It's harsh but it's just part of the traditional turnover of showbusiness."

However, fans have been left less than impressed by the speculation. One online user said on X/: "This is so tone deaf! The pros are what the people love. People follow and support the pros as much, if not more, than the celebs. Wake up and axe a couple of the judges!" Another added: "NOOOOOO!!!!!!! Leave it alone! We love the favourite pros."
