Elton John says Brexit has caused 'logistical nightmare' for music industry

Sir Elton John laments the “division” caused by Brexit and the logistical nightmare it has caused the music industry.

The rocker claims the legislation has placed “leg irons” on travelling musicians. Sir Elton has released a new book filled with memories of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, which he says was made more difficult by the UK leaving the EU.

He also resents all the polarised opinions after “the bloody government tricked people into a bad vote”. “People in Britain weren’t told the truth,” he says. “Being back on tour in Europe and experiencing the impact of Britain leaving the European Union first-hand caused the frustration and anger to hit me all over again. One of Britain’s greatest and most successful exports has been its music. Look at The Beatles, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Adele, Ed Sheeran, me… we have created an extraordinary global musical footprint.”

He believes musicians become “a sort of soft diplomacy” for the UK, explaining: “When I go to a new place, I leave a footprint behind and that matters.” But he says the red tape involved in moving between countries could jeopardise young artists.

“The government has slapped leg irons on them when it comes to touring in Europe,” he continues in Farewell Yellow Brick Road: Memories of My Life on Tour. They are jeopardising each artist’s future and also the country’s status as a cultural force. It horrified me, and continues to.”
