Emi Martinez sums up Aston Villa's incredible Bayern win in just two words

Emi Martinez branded Aston Villa's famous Champions League triumph over Bayern Munich "a statement" to their European rivals.

The Villa goalkeeper did his part to keep the German giants at bay both before and after Jhon Duran stepped up off the bench to plunder a stunning 79th minute winner to send Villa Park potty.

Unai Emery's side have won both of their opening Champions League fixtures and now sit among a cluster of teams at the top of the competition's new-look table with six points from six - and Martinez used their triumph over Bayern to lay down the gauntlet to their European foes.

Asked to describe the win, the Argentinian said: “A statement. There's still a lot to play [for]. We want to qualify in the first eight, in the top eight, it's one step at a time, we've got Bologna at home now in our second game, we are probably more relaxed but we want to win every game.”

He added: “It's unreal to be fair. This is the loudest Villa Park that I've heard since I joined the club, that's for sure, it was hurting my ears at some point. It's a club that is moving forward. It's the main reason why I stay in this football club. I love playing here, I love the fans, this is a win for them.”

Duran has made a habit of scoring important goals off the bench during his time at Villa Park. He came up trumps again when he replaced Ollie Watkins in the 70th minute as Villa continued their search for a breakthrough.

The Colombia international was the subject of transfer interest from a whole host of clubs this summer but is still in claret and blue. And Martinez reserved special praise for Villa's match-winner on a night that will go down in club folklore.

Martinez said of the striker: “He came back with a different mentality this season. He's willing to work hard, he's pushing Ollie all the way, they can play together he's a super sub, the first time he touched the ball, he lobbed Neuer, one of the best goals in history.”

Emery lauded both Duran and Martinez in his own post-match interview following a string of impressive saves from the former Arsenal star.

He said firstly of Duran: “We are working with him. Most important is his attitude. He's available to play 90, 60, 30 minutes. He's been focusing each minute he's playing. Today we had two very good strikers. It's fantastic for him and the team.

“Against teams like that, it's very important to be strong. Martinez did an amazing job, amazing saves.

“We have to try to play each match. We compete very well, we won. Maybe we can get the first eight positions.”
