If you're an overthinker, chances are you've felt pretty restless at times.

When you can't stop worrying about things, it can feel impossible to relax, rest or even sleep. But thankfully, there are ways you can stop these intrusive thoughts from negatively impacting your life.

On TikTok, a neuroscientist who goes by the username Em On The Brain, shared her top tips to stop wallowing and ruminating. It's all about taking control of the situation.

Emily recommends thinking about something specific. She said: "This is a visualisation technique that I use to immediately let something go, and bring peace back to my mind.

"What I'll do is, I'll close my eyes, and imagine me and the situation that is stressing me out connected by a rope, and then I will imagine a pair of scissors cutting the rope between me and whatever it is that's stressing me out.

"Then I will watch it float away like a balloon. I have now mentally detached, and it can't affect me anymore. That allows me to bring peace into my mind, so that I can go back to my trust and surrender mantra that is very wired into my brain at this point."

Since the video was shared, people have been left stunned by the method. It's been viewed more than 2,000 times – and people love how simple it is.

One person said: "That makes so much sense." Another wrote: "Needed this." Meanwhile, a third added: "I've done this. It really works."

If you're still struggling to cope with overthinking and the anxiety it can cause, it may be worth talking to a counsellor or medical professional.
