Mats Hummels has , having worked under both former boss and .
The center-back, now thriving at Roma and whose trophy cabinet boasts the coveted 2014 World Cup win with Germany, plus an impressive tally of 16 domestic accolades, opened up about the tactical discord that soured his relationship with Edin Terzic - the successor to Klopp and Tuchel - during their time together at Dortmund.
Despite his successful career which saw him lift multiple trophies with both Dortmund and Bayern Munich, it was the defensive mindset adopted in the lead-up to a pivotal Champions League final loss against that left him seething.
"I was furious because I was of the opinion that Borussia Dortmund shouldn't play like that - against any opponent in the world," Hummels told Bild. "I didn't think it could go on like this. I felt insulted in my honour to stand on the pitch in that kit. So submissive, so inferior in footballing terms. The two Stuttgart games and the away game in Leverkusen. That was barricading with 11 men in the box."
Terzic wasn't the first manager he'd fallen out with - Hummels didn't see eye-to-eye with Tuchel, who called him out publicly following the DFB Pokal final in 2016. "Mats can do better," he argued having substituted him in the 78th minute.
Bayern beat them on penalties after a goalless draw, and Hummels would go on to join them that summer. But he still had respect for Tuchel - who is expected to take the England job from January onwards - despite their frosty relationship.
"If you look at the statistics, he was a good coach for sure," he later admitted. "Everything else has to be decided by others. Under Thomas Tuchel, a different person from what I had known with Klopp, with a different approach, it also worked very well."
Neither Terzic nor Tuchel compared to Jurgen Klopp for Hummels, though. He spent six years working under the future Liverpool boss, who left a long-lasting impression on him.
"Under Klopp it was amazing, very successful and emotional, but also very nice in other ways," he said. "He had different ideas on how to play the game, there was a lot I experienced off the pitch.
"It was very interesting and I'm glad I got to work with him during this time. I know how strong Klopp's teams are. They work so hard, they play so intense and aggressively with the quality of players they have - especially up front."
