Major supermarket issues 'do not eat' warning as it recalls pesto over vomiting bug fears

Send Push

A major supermarket has recalled pesto pots amid fears they could contain a vomiting bug, with customers being advised "do not eat" the product.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) said Waitrose was recalling the No1 Pesto alla Genovese as salmonella had been found inside the products. It added the products with a "use by" date of September 26 are those that are affected. The bacteria is known to contribute to food poisoning, which can cause illness in the person who consumed a tainted product. Waitrose warned customer who bought the sauce pot should not eat them or else they might risk getting food poisoning.

"Waitrose & Partners is recalling the above product. Point of sale notices will be displayed in stores where the product was sold," the FSA said. "These notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product. Please see the attached notice.

It told customers to package up the pots and return the product to their local branch for a full refund. "We apologise that it has been necessary to recall this product and for the inconvenience caused," it added, according to The Sun. It comes as experts warn customers they might be storing their food wrong and could accidentally get food poisoning. Among affected products, people are struck down because they do not store their food properly.
