In arguably the biggest upset victory in the Haryana assembly election, independent candidate Savitri Jindal has won from the Hisar seat. Savitri Jindal, who is also India's richest woman, defeated Congress's Ram Niwas Rara with a comfortable lead of over 13,000 votes. BJP's sitting MLA Dr. Kamal Gupta finished a distant third in Hisar, in the results announced on Tuesday.

Why Savitri Jindal contested as Independent

The industrialist, who is also a former two-term MP, contested the polls from Hisar as an Independent after the BJP denied her a ticket and decided to give one more chance to the incumbent MLA.

Savitri Jindal, who is also the mother of BJP MP from Kurukshetra, Naveen Jindal, had staked her claim for the seat, arguing that she should be given one last chance to serve the people of Hisar and complete developmental work.

Jindal family's Hisar connection

The Jindal family has close ties to Hisar, where Savitri's husband, the late industrialist OP Jindal, was born. OP Jindal was also the MLA of Hisar, from where he won three Assembly elections (1991, 2000, and 2005). He was also a minister in the Hooda government when he died in a helicopter crash in 2005.

Savitri Jindal succeeded her husband following his death and was elected to the assembly twice.

Savitri Jindal, who preferred not to contest the 2019 Assembly polls, and her son switched from the Congress to the BJP in March, ending their nearly two-decade association with the Congress.

“Hisar is my family. I am in the fray for the last time to honour the feelings of my constituents. After all, I have to obey their wishes,” Savitri Jindal had said while explaining her reason for contesting as an independent candidate.

Will Savitri Jindal support BJP

Though she had resigned from the Congress and campaigned for her son, Naveen Jindal, in the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year, Savitri Jindal had not formally joined the BJP. There are reports that she would be extending support to the BJP
