Kolkata: Post Kalipuja and Diwali, at least 700 CAA camps will be organised across West Bengal by various Santani Hindu organisations, including the West Bengal BJP leadership, in the nine bordering districts of Bangladesh, to push the momentum of CAA application, with an eye on the 2026 assembly polls.
A massive CAA application drive across Bengal is likely to help the Matua and other Hindu refugee communities, who have come to Bengal till 2024 due to religious persecution from Bangladesh.
More CAA applicants, coupled with Hindu vote consolidation, is likely to act as BJP’s poll plank for the 2026 polls. The BJP’s Bengal leadership is seriously considering CAA and special intensive revision (SIR). According to the top leadership, the SIR will not only delete the dead voters and those who have shifted their places of residence, but it will also weed out Muslim infiltrators from Bangladesh staying in the state.
BJP Leader of Opposition (LoP) Suvendu Adhikari is leading a ‘No SIR, No Vote’ campaign.
The non-payment of dearness allowance is believed to have pushed state government employees away from the Trinamool government.
General secretary of All India Matua Mahasangh general secretary Mahitosh Baidya told ET, “It has been decided to set up many CAA help-camps after Kali Puja”. The Matua sect, founded by Harichand Thakur, commands the loyalty of about 1.75 crore people, a critical population in Bangaon, Barasat, Ranaghat, Krishnanagar, and Cooch Behar Lok Sabha constituencies.
CAA will work as a safeguard for Hindus who have come from Bangladesh, a top BJP leader told ET.
“Muslims, whose names will be matched with the 2022 SIR are the actual citizens of Bengal, and respect Bengal’s culture and ethos. The legacy of dhoti-clad Bengali Muslims, like AB Gani Khan Chowdhury and his family, and many others are revered by all. They have their past rooted in Bengal’s Murshidabad and Malda,” sources said.
“However, those who have infiltrated to Bengal between 2014 to the present day, and get benefits from the Trinamool government, have no proper locus standi and cannot fill the enumeration form during SIR. Their aim of coming to Bengal is to earn a livelihood and get the benefits of Bengal’s social welfare schemes, not voting rights,” a top BJP leader claimed.
LoP’s Convoy Attacked
Adhikari faced obstruction by various Trinamool-led groups, when he went there for Kalipuja inaugurations at many places in South 24 Parganas district. “In South 24 Parganas district, I faced repeated attacks from illegal Bangladeshi Muslims. The obstruction, vandalism and chaos were orchestrated by TMC zilla parishad member Rekha Gazi with the support of SP Koteswara Rao. Several attempts were made to stop my car, at least at seven locations, and an attack took place right in front of Lalpur Madrasa,” Adhikari posted on X.
“I wasn't going to participate in any political event, but to join the Kali Puja and Diwali festivities as a Hindu. These people, who are mainly illegal infiltrators, are wary of their fate due to the SIR process. So, they are venting out their anger. This region is adjacent Bangladesh and this has allowed them to settle down here with the help of the infiltrator-friendly TMC ecosystem. Can't a Hindu participate in any religious event in West Bengal freely without facing obstructions from radicals? They can’t intimidate me, I will be back during Jagadhatri Puja,” Adhikari said.
