Maharashtra is grappling with severe rainfall for the third consecutive day, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue red and orange alerts for several districts, including Mumbai.
On 29 September, districts such as Nashik, Palghar, Thane, Mumbai City, Mumbai Suburban, Raigad, and Pune have been placed under a red alert, with forecasts warning of extremely heavy showers, thunderstorms, and strong winds.
Meanwhile, an orange alert has been declared for Nandurbar, Jalgaon, Bhandara, Ratnagiri, Satara, and Sindhudurg, where very heavy rain, lightning, and squally winds are expected throughout the day.
The rest of the state, including Gondia, Gadchiroli, Nagpur, Chandrapur, Wardha, Yavatmal, Amravati, Akola, Buldhana, Jalna, Aurangabad, Ahmednagar, Nanded, Hingoli, Parbhani, Beed, Latur, Osmanabad, Solapur, Sangli, and Kolhapur, is under a yellow alert, the IMD’s second tier in its four-level warning system.
According to a PTI report, at least ten people have died in rain-related incidents across Maharashtra in the past 24 hours, while over 11,800 people have been rescued from affected areas. Four deaths were reported in Nashik, including three due to a house collapse, while two each occurred in Dharashiv and Ahilyanagar, and one each in Jalna and Yavatmal.
Marathwada Hit Hard
Marathwada, one of the worst-hit regions, has seen a surge in inflow into the Jayakwadi dam on the Godavari river, forcing authorities to open all its gates. Around 7,000 people were evacuated from Paithan in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar amid fears of flooding. Harsul circle recorded 196 mm of rainfall over the last 24 hours. Other districts in Marathwada, including Beed, Nanded, and Parbhani, also reported heavy rains.
Mumbai Rains and Traffic Update
Mumbai has been experiencing heavy showers since Saturday night. On Sunday, intermittent downpours continued, with some areas recording more than 50 mm of rain between 8 am and 1 pm, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. The intensity of the rains eased after the afternoon, and vehicular and rail traffic remained largely smooth. Key underpasses and junctions, including Hindmata, Gandhi Market, Chunabhatti, Malad, Dahisar, and Mankhurd, saw smooth movement.

The IMD’s district-wise outlook predicts that widespread heavy rainfall is likely across Maharashtra until 3 October, urging residents to remain cautious and follow safety advisories.
