NCP leader Baba Siddique was shot in Bandra East, Mumbai. The firing took place outside his MLA son Zeeshan Siddiqui's office near Colgate ground in Nirmal Nagar on Saturday. He was rushed to the Lilavati Hospital but could not survive, said Mumbai police. Another person has been injured in the incident where three rounds were fired. Three assailants came on a bike, fired at the leader while crackers were being burst.
According to sources, the involvement of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang is being investigated given the leader's proximity to Bollywood actor Salman Khan.
Another angle being investigated is Siddique's involvement in a dispute concerning a SRA project, the sources said.
"Two culprits have been caught one is from Haryana and one is from Uttar Pradesh. There is a third culprit who is absconding and we will catch him too. The Mumbai police is capable of handling the law and order," said Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, adding the the case would be heard in the fast track court.
The probe has been handed over to the Mumbai crime branch.
Meanwhile, political figures and parties offered their condolences.
"The Mumbai Congress is deeply saddened by the passing of Baba Siddique Ji. His tireless service to the people and his dedication to the community will forever be remembered. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace," said Mumbai Congress on X.
NCP MP and former union minister Praful Patel called for strict action against the culprits.
NCP(SCP) leader and National Spokesperson Clyde Crasto said, "The news about Baba Siddique is very disturbing. The concern here is that the law and order situation in Maharashtra is going really down and it has failed. The BJP led Mahayuti needs to answer to the people of Maharashtra why they have failed to bring law & order under control. People are taking the law into their own hands and feel free to do what they want because there is no fear of the law. The Home Department led by Devendra Fadnavis seems to have failed.
