The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a major weather alert for Karnataka, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds across the state. A five-day advisory is in place from April 25 to April 29, affecting all three major regions—Coastal, North Interior, and South Interior Karnataka.
Between April 25 and April 28, Karnataka will experience active thunderstorm conditions. Gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 50 kmph are expected to accompany lightning and moderate to heavy rainfall. The IMD attributes this weather pattern to a north-south trough extending from Marathwada to the Gulf of Mannar at 0.9 km above mean sea level, influencing moisture and instability in the region. A temporary lull in severe weather is forecasted on April 29, offering brief relief for a short time.
District-level alerts
Specific warnings have been issued for several districts including Chikkamagaluru, Gadag, Ballari, Kodagu, and Belagavi. These areas are likely to see intense rainfall and strong winds. Belagavi, in particular, is under a hailstorm warning, with wind speeds predicted to touch 40–50 kmph. On April 28, stronger surface winds in South Interior Karnataka could lead to uprooted trees and localized damage.
Bengaluru's weather outlook
Bengaluru continues to sizzle under high temperatures. The city recorded a maximum temperature of 35.4°C on both Tuesday and Wednesday, marking a consistent heat trend. Over the past three days, daytime highs have hovered around 34.4°C to 35.4°C, and this warm spell is expected to persist for another 5–6 days.
Although largely dry conditions will prevail until April 27, light rain or thundershowers are likely from April 27 onwards. Gusty winds—reaching 50–60 kmph on April 27 and 40–50 kmph on April 28 and 29—may accompany these showers. The IMD advises residents to stay vigilant, particularly in the late afternoon and evening hours when weather activity tends to intensify.
As Karnataka braces for dynamic weather over the next several days, residents are urged to follow official advisories, secure outdoor items, and avoid sheltering under trees during storms. With the possibility of hail, strong winds, and rain, preparedness is key to staying safe.
