Mumbai's New Cable-Stayed Belasis Flyover To Connect Tardeo, Nagpada And Mumbai Central By December 2025

The new cable-stayed Belasis flyover set to connect Tardeo, Nagpada, and Mumbai Central station is progressing ahead of schedule and is expected to be completed by December 31, 2025, claimed the BMC administration on Monday. To ensure smooth construction, the BMC has also cleared all structures that were obstructing the work. 

Multi-Agency Coordination for Timely Completion

The old Bellasis Bridge, built in 1893, was dismantled by the Railways in June 2024 after being deemed unfit following a structural audit. To replace it, the BMC is constructing a modern cable-stayed bridge aimed at improving connectivity between Nagpada and Tardeo. Given the bridge's location above railway tracks, the cable-stayed design was chosen to minimise piling and expedite construction. The BMC and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) have signed an agreement with the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC) to execute the project. 

The work within the railway boundary is being carried out by Western Railway, while the approach roads are being developed by the BMC. In the first phase, the railway contractor completed the launching of 12 girders, each spanning 36 meters long. Currently, railway authorities are undertaking key structural tasks including girder bracing, deck sheet installation, and slab casting. For this, 40 blocks related to traffic and power supply will be taken.

Significant Progress on Key Structural Work

Abhijeet Bangar, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects), confirmed steady progress on the Bellasis bridge project. “So far, soil testing, foundation work, and pier construction have been completed, and all construction obstructions have been cleared." He noted that 40 girders are planned for the eastern approach road, with four already installed. “Within railway limits, all 12 main girders have also been successfully launched by the contractor,” Bangar added.

5. Completion Target Set for December 2025

Work on the remaining pier for the western approach is set to begin shortly. Key tasks such as girder bracing, deck sheet installation, and slab casting are targeted for completion by September 14. “Following that, both approach roads will be constructed, and the entire project is on track to be completed by December 31, 2025,” he stated.
