Dr Sudhir Mehta, former president of the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA), slammed the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) over the rampant dumping of garbage and construction debris across the city.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Mehta wrote, "#Pune's roads are in an unforgivable state – encroachments, crumbling surfaces, and potholes have turned our streets into a nightmare. What’s left is filled with garbage and construction debris. There is no excuse, no justification, for the city becoming a garbage dump."

Netizens agreed with Mehta and demanded the PMC take immediate action.

"What do we expect from a city that has not had local elections for 2.5 years? Nobody accountable. Ask no questions, hear no answers. The city is collapsing in terms of traffic, breaking of rules, and encroachment everywhere," an X user wrote.

"If the system and authorities want, then they can make (Indore) or break (Pune) a city. Elected representatives are at fault. No one else," commented another user.

"All Pune industries should come together, stop any CSR given for PMC work, and utilise that money directly with their own management skills. There are a bunch of people you would see cleaning and fixing the potholes, all shabby jobs only to reopen the work for them again. @PMCPune is way beyond accepting their responsibilities," suggested a third user.

Earlier, author and columnist Shefali Vaidya also wrote on X about the same issue.

Vaidya wrote, "I honestly don’t know what @PMCPune does! Every road in Pune within the city limits has garbage and construction waste dumped by the roadside, even the Pune-Bengaluru highway between Bavdhan and Baner. Mounds and mounds of festering plastic garbage, just piling up every day!"

She added, "No one clears it up or fines the people who dump garbage and construction waste. There are no corporators to complain to, as there have been no municipal elections. PMC officials have no fear of losing their jobs, so they do nothing at all!"
