Rajasthan Tragedy: Eight Children Dead, 28 Injured After School Roof Collapses In Jhalawar; Probe Ordered (Video)

In a tragic mishap, eight children, including two siblings, died and 28 were injured after a part of a government school building collapsed in Jhalawar, Rajasthan. The incident sparked public outrage, with locals blocking the Jhalawar–Manoharthana road in protest.

The collapse occurred at Piplodi Government School in the Manoharthana block of the district. The roof of a classroom gave way on Friday morning while around 35 children had gathered there for morning prayers due to rainfall outside.

Locals said some children had complained to teachers about pebbles falling from the ceiling, but the warnings were ignored. Soon after, the roof collapsed.

Dangipura Police Station officer Vijendra Singh said that all 35 children present in the classroom were trapped under the debris. Four children died on the spot, while four others succumbed to injuries during treatment at the hospital. A teacher was also injured, although he has not been admitted.

Villagers rushed to the site upon hearing a loud crash. A rescue operation followed, with locals and emergency personnel pulling children from the rubble. All injured were initially taken to Manoharthana Hospital.

“Thirty-five injured children were brought to our facility. Eleven of them were critical and have now been referred to the district hospital in Jhalawar for further treatment,” said Dr. Kaushal Lodha, medical officer at Manoharthana Hospital.

Villagers alleged that the school building had been in a dangerous condition for months, but repeated complaints to the administration went unheeded. BJP MLA and former minister Pratap Singh Singhvi had previously written to the education minister, warning about unsafe school buildings in the region.

Ironically, just 10 days ago, a directive had been issued mandating physical security checks of all schools, along with immediate repair of any damaged or dilapidated parts. However, Education Secretary Krishna Kunal clarified that the Chief Block Education Officer (CBEO) associated with the school had submitted a report stating there were no problems with the building. “Action will be taken against the officer who submitted this false report,” said Kunal.

In response to the tragedy, Education Minister Madan Dilawar has suspended all five teachers posted at the school, including the principal. He also ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident.

President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, and former CMs Vasundhara Raje and Ashok Gehlot expressed grief over the incident and extended condolences to the families of the victims.
