Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker agree there are alarm bells over Man Utd deadline day deal

Send Push

Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker have doubts over whether Senne Lammens can handle the pressure cooker environment at Manchester United. The Belgian shot-stopper arrived at Old Trafford from Royal Antwerp in an £18.2million deadline day deal.

It comes after question marks emerged over Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir's capabilities between the sticks. Bayindir faced fierce criticism following a blunder that handed Arsenal a 1-0 victory over United at Old Trafford in their seasonal opener.

Meanwhile, Onana was part of Ruben Amorim's side that crashed out of the Carabao Cup on penalties to Grimsby Town last month. During that clash, he spilt a set-piece clearance which allowed the League Two outfit to establish a 2-0 first-half advantage, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Plenty of United supporters will be hoping for a fresh start with a new No. 1, but Lineker and Shearer remain unconvinced that the 23-year-old is the solution to their problems.

Speaking on , Lineker said: "Manchester United have brought in a goalkeeper, Senne Lammens, from Royal Antwerp, who apparently made more saves than any other goalkeeper last season. That doesn't always mean what it sounds like it means; they might have just been a bad team at Royal Antwerp."

Shearer added: "Young for the situation that he has to go into. If he's going to go straight in there, that's going to be a big ask for him. What happened to the Emi Martinez deal? I don't know because he didn't play the other night, did he?

"Obviously, he didn't get the move that he wanted. So that's going to be a big ask for a young goalkeeper to go in there and start and perform."

Lammens shipped 32 goals across 30 outings in Belgium's top flight for Royal Antwerp last season, managing an impressive seven clean sheets during the campaign. He was also crowned the division's Player of the Month twice and made 173 stops throughout the term - more than any other keeper across Europe's leading 10 leagues.

Amorim's squad have suffered defeat, drawn, and secured victory in their first three Premier League fixtures against Arsenal, Fulham, and Burnley respectively, with Bayindir manning the posts. And going into the final fortnight of the transfer window, the Portuguese boss even dismissed suggestions that United required a fresh goalkeeper.

After their opening day defeat to Arsenal, Amorim told reporters: "I'm happy with the three goalkeepers. He [Bayindir] chooses to get the ball, but he's getting pushed. That is my feeling when I see the play.

"You choose to push a player [out of the way] or to get the ball in that moment. He needs to use his hands to catch the ball, not push players. He chooses to push players and let the ball pass."

However, as the transfer deadline loomed, it appeared that the powers that be at Old Trafford had a change of heart, setting their sights on Aston Villa shot-stopper Emiliano Martinez. Despite the 32-year-old making his desire to join the Red Devils known, the board chose instead to sign Lammens, who is nine years younger than the Argentine.

The Manchester United faithful will have to bide their time before they see Lammens in action, given that the Premier League is currently taking a breather for an international break. Supporters may, however, catch a glimpse of what the new face can do when the Manchester derby kicks off at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, 14 September.
