CHRISTOPHER BUCKTIN 'Trump's trade wars were never about America - they're about his dictatorship plans'

Send Push

Today, global suffered one of their most dramatic falls in modern history. Trillions were wiped out in hours. Economies trembled. And at the centre of this financial chaos stands one man: .

Let’s not pretend this is a surprise. Trump’s trade wars were never about securing better deals for the American worker or restoring industry. They were a personal power play - a way to intimidate allies, antagonise rivals, and force global markets to bend to his will.

They weren’t launched with strategy. They were launched with spite. And now, the world is paying the price. But I’m not entirely angry at Trump. It may sound odd, given how deplorable a man he is and the wreckage - such as the shuttering factories, the ballooning deficits, and rising grocery bills - left in his wake.

But the truth is, he never hid what he planned to do. His intentions were loud, clear, and chilling from the beginning.

He campaigned on chaos. He promised to upend the system, to be a "strongman," to punish enemies, both foreign and domestic. He openly admired dictators and fantasised about ruling with unchecked authority.

He told us who he was: a man who values personal loyalty over institutional stability, who sees dissent as treason, and who treats facts as optional.

And yet, 77,284,118 Americans saw all this - and voted for him anyway.

Today, many of them say they regret it.

They tell us as their pensions tanks and their retirement dreams slip away, that they feel betrayed. They’re stunned that inflation hasn’t gone down as he promised, that taxes haven’t been slashed, that food prices are still climbing, and that the world economy is teetering on a cliff.

But how foolish they are to have not seen it coming?

Trump’s campaign was built on empty promises - vows to lower prices, cut taxes, end wars - none of which ever stood a chance of becoming reality.

His true agenda was always about control, not prosperity. He didn’t want to lead America. He wanted America to follow him - blindly, obediently, at any cost.

My anger isn’t just with the man in the Oval Office. It’s with the millions who empowered him, who handed him the keys to the country despite every warning sign flashing red.

It’s with those who ignored the danger because they wanted to “shake things up” or “send a message.”

Well, message received. And the markets just answered back - loud and clear.
