Netflix's Hostage creator speaks out on character's 'death' as finale ending explained

Hostage is the newest Netflix drama captivating television audiences following its eagerly awaited debut on 21 August.

The five-episode thriller chronicles an international conference between French and British leaders that spirals into mayhem when the Prime Minister's (Suranne Jones) spouse gets abducted and the French president (Julie Delpy) becomes embroiled in an extortion scheme.

Every instalment brims with shocking revelations and unexpected developments, sending viewers on an emotional whirlwind. The programme wraps up with Abigail (Suranne) trapped in another kidnapping scenario, as Shagan (Martin McCann) threatens Alex (Ashley Thomas) with a blade.

A confrontation ensues, but matters intensify when Sylvie (Isobel Akuwudike) fires at Shagan, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Although a three-month time jump features in the finale, audiences remain uncertain whether Shagan has truly perished and what fate awaits Abigail.

Recently, Hostage creator Matt Charman has discussed how the narrative might conclude, notwithstanding the dramatic cliffhanger.

He disclosed to RadioTimes.com: "I think Shagan's dead. It was completely intentional around Sylvie because I think, truthfully, those ripples are... they never stop.

"If you do that, if you're in a situation where you do something that completely crosses a line as a human being, there's no end to that trauma or that sense of who am I now, who was I before? That would be fun to explore, what that does to a person as they enter adulthood."

Matt further elaborated on his intentions for the series, stating that he wanted Abigail and her family to be "involved in the action" right up until the final moments of the show.

This led to his decision to have Sylvie pull the trigger on Shagan, as it was "crucial" that she played a part in the climax.

He expressed his desire for the ending to be both "satisfying" and unexpected for viewers, allowing them to "feel the ripple" of all of Abigail's choices and their effects on her family.

Hostage, which is Suranne's debut in a Netflix original series, was initially advertised as a single-season limited series.

However, Matt's remarks could suggest the possibility of a second series to reveal exactly what transpired with Shagan and how Abigail's life unfolded following the drama.
