Rio Ferdinand makes new Ruben Amorim job security claim after big Man Utd statement

Manchester United are all in on Ruben Amorim and the impending departure of Andre Onana proves it. That's the opinion of United legend Rio Ferdinand, who's glad to see the club backing their manager's decisions.

Amorim made a 'big statement' by dropping Onana, 29, at the beginning of the season, installing Altay Bayindir as his new first-choice goalkeeper. But following Bayindir's string of mistakes in the Premier League, United decided to bring in a new goalkeeper on transfer deadline day, hoping to solve their problems once and for all.

Senne Lammens arrived from Royal Antwerp, as the Red Devils agreed to pay an initial £18.2million plus £3.5million in potential add-ons. In the wake of Lammens' arrival, Onana has decided to leave.

The Cameroon international is due to land in Turkey within the next 24 hours to finalise a season-long loan to Trabzonspor. According to Ferdinand, the way things have panned out is sufficient evidence that the Old Trafford hierarchy fully support Amorim.

"I was happy that the manager is being able to make his mind up on things and the recruitment team are executing behind that," Ferdinand told the Mail. "They are backing the manager.

"If people were thinking there were any doubts about the club backing the manager or Amorim being at the football club, it's only going to be his decision whether Onana stays or Lammens comes in. It's a great sign in that respect.

"Whether you think Onana should have stayed or not is irrelevant. The manager has made his mind up. He played Bayindir early on and said he's in because of football reasons. That was a big statement from the manager and his intentions of what he wanted to do with Onana."

Ferdinand went on to say that United have done 'magnificently well' this summer to offload the vast majority of players who aren't part of Amorim's plans. "In years gone by, say we wanted six players to leave the football club - Onana being one of them - I would argue that minimum three to four of them would have stayed," the former defender explained.

"That wouldn't have helped anybody, the player or the club. As important as the ones that came in and upped the levels, it was as important to get out the players who were deemed not right for the club for whatever reason.

"They've done magnificently well. Yes, they are only loans, most of them, but to clear the decks of those players was as powerful as bringing in good players."
