Potato is an important part of every household kitchen, which we use in vegetables, snacks and many types of dishes. But, for profiteering, some traders are selling fake potatoes by cooking and colouring them with chemicals, which can cause great harm to our health. Recently, the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) has seized 21 quintals of fake potatoes in a major operation in Ballia.

According to reports, white potatoes were being dyed red and sold at high prices. This potato can prove to be extremely dangerous for health and can also cause fatal diseases like cancer. Such fake potatoes are not only harmful for health but can also make the body a victim of serious diseases in the long run.

How to identify fake potatoes?

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has given a simple way to identify fake potatoes. If you take a potato in your hand and crush it a little and it starts leaving color, then it can be fake. Apart from this, it can also be tested by dipping the potato in water. If there is any fake color on the potato, it will wash off in water.

Harmful effects of potatoes cooked with chemicals

According to FSSAI, calcium carbide is used in potatoes cooked with chemicals, which contain arsenic and phosphorus. This chemical is extremely dangerous for health and can cause problems like vomiting, diarrhea, stomach irritation and excessive thirst. Not only this, arsenic can also cause cancer if it remains in the body for a long time.

Potatoes dyed with red dye

Reports have suggested that fake potatoes are dyed with red dye. This dye is harmful to the body and is considered carcinogenic. Therefore, it is important to be cautious while buying potatoes and avoid potatoes with any unknown colour or smell.
