Benefits of keeping water in a bucket in an AC room: When the temperature crosses 40 degrees in summer, an air conditioner (AC) seems no less than a boon. Especially in countries like India, where fans and coolers sometimes become ineffective due to heat, AC is the only relief. But have you ever felt that the air in the room becomes cool by running the AC, but at the same time it also becomes dry? This dryness not only affects your throat and skin but ignoring it for a long time can also be harmful to health. In such a situation, a very simple home remedy can prove to be very effective - keep a bucket or bowl filled with water in the room. When India spoke to Dr. Shivkumar, who is the Chief Consultant Pulmonologist in the Department of Respiratory Medicine at Kaveri Hospital, Bengaluru, about this suggestion, he described this idea as very useful.

Why is room humidity important?

Dr. Shivkumar explains that when we use AC continuously, it reduces the humidity in the room. While cooling the air, AC also absorbs the moisture present in it. The effect of this is that the air in the room becomes very dry. Due to this, the nose starts drying, the throat starts stinging, and itching or dryness is felt on the skin.

What is the benefit of keeping water in a bucket?

According to Dr. Shivkumar, if water is kept in a bucket or steel plate in the room, then the water can slowly evaporate from it and balance the humidity in the room a little. This method is not as effective as a humidifier, but it can provide relief to a great extent in small or medium-sized rooms. Especially when the air seems very dry.

What are the disadvantages of staying in dry air for a long time?

If you constantly stay in a dry environment, it can affect your health. Doctors say that too much dry air can worsen respiratory diseases like asthma and bronchitis. It can be even more dangerous for people who already have respiratory problems. Also, problems like eczema can increase when the skin's moisture is gone. The inner lining of the nose starts drying, which can cause nose bleeding and the body's natural defense against external dust also weakens.

What else can you do to reduce dryness?

Dr. Shivkumar also tells some other easy ways with the help of which you can keep the air in your room balanced.

Use a humidifier: If there are small children or elderly people in the house, it would be better to use an electronic humidifier instead of a bucket. With this, you can control the level of humidity.

Keep yourself hydrated: Drink as much water as possible so that the body remains hydrated from the inside.

Adopt moisturizing skin care: Apply moisturizer after bathing to prevent the skin from becoming dry.

Allow air circulation in the room: When possible, open a window or door for a while to let fresh air in.

Get your AC serviced regularly: If the AC is not cleaned, dust accumulates in it, making the air even drier and impure.

AC provides relief in summers, but if the humidity of the room is not taken care of, it can have a bad effect on the body. In such a situation, a small precaution - like keeping a bucket of water in the room - can save you from many big problems. It not only reduces skin and respiratory problems, but also makes the environment of your house more healthy.
