Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Glen Maxwell… this is a long list of brilliant batsmen who are no match for the bowler we are going to talk about. His international career is just 2 years old, and his age is also just 21 years, but he sends famous batsmen to the pavilion as if it is a left-handed game for him. We are talking about Sri Lanka's left-arm spinner Dunithe Wellalage, who gave a tough time to the West Indies team in the match played in Dambulla on 15 October.
Dunithe Wellalage is a heavy weight on West Indies' hopes. The second match of the T20 series played in Dambulla was important for Sri Lanka. Batting first in this important match, Sri Lanka scored 162 runs for 5 wickets in 20 overs. That is, West Indies got a target of 163 runs to win. The way the Caribbean team chased the target of 180 runs in the first T20, they had an upper hand in the second T20 as well. But, those hopes related to the West Indies were shattered by the spin of Dunithe Vellalaage.
Dunithe Wellalage took down the wickets of West Indies' top-orderDunithe Wellalage did what was most important for the Sri Lankan team in the second T20 against West Indies. The 21-year-old spinner made his T20I debut in this match attacked the Caribbean top order and took everyone in his clutches one after the other. Wellalage took the first wicket of Brandon King. After this, he took the wicket of Roston Chase in his next over. The third and last wicket he took was that of Andre Fletcher.
Did a great job on T20I debutDunithe Wellalage took the wickets of these three West Indies batsmen in 4 overs. He took the wickets of all three by giving away only 9 runs. That means on his T20 International debut, he took 3 wickets by giving away 9 runs in 4 overs. After losing the wickets of its 3 big batsmen within just 7 overs, the West Indies team could never get back on track and was all out for 89 runs. In this way, Sri Lanka won the match by 73 runs. Wellalage could not become the hero of the victory i.e. the Player of the Match on his T20I debut. But his performance was not less than that standard.
Getting the veterans out has been an old habit. It was not surprising to see Vellalage dismissing the West Indies batsmen on his T20I debut because he is already used to it. Among Indian batsmen, he has dismissed Rohit, Virat, Gill, KL Rahul, and Hardik Pandya in a single ODI match. Among other batsmen of the world, he has dismissed great batsmen like Steve Smith, David Warner, Glenn Maxwell, and Marnus Labuschagne.
