The beloved heist thriller Now You See Me is currently available for streaming this weekend, along with its follow-up Now You See Me 2. Paramount Plus viewers are being encouraged to revisit both films in preparation for 2025's Now You See Me: Now You Don't, the third instalment in the series set for release in November.
Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics with a 51% rating, Now You See Me boasts an impressive 70% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, with one viewer hailing it as the "perfect cat and mouse" tale. Additional supporters have branded the magical caper film a "comfort watch", with many praising its gripping plot developments.
The slick magician-centred production features an outstanding ensemble cast, featuring Mark Ruffalo, Jessie Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher and Dave Franco, alongside Hollywood icons Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman. The film's plot summary states: "Charismatic magician Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg) leads a team of talented illusionists called the Four Horsemen.
"Atlas and his comrades mesmerize audiences with a pair of amazing magic shows that drain the bank accounts of the corrupt and funnel the money to audience members.
"A federal agent (Mark Ruffalo) and an Interpol detective (Melanie Laurent) intend to rein in the Horsemen before their next caper, and they turn to Thaddeus (Morgan Freeman), a famous debunker, for help."
Viewers can now catch up with the original picture and its sequel on Paramount+, which offers a seven-day complimentary trial with its membership.
Rotten Tomatoes' comment section has been abuzz with fans sharing their rave reviews of the 2013 thriller, lauding its entertainment value, reports the Mirror.
One fan gushed: "Such a fun movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it from the first scene to the last. So entertaining!"
Another viewer was equally impressed, stating: "Entertaining and I loved that I didn't have it figured out." While another echoed the sentiment, writing: "Maybe people just don't like magic but I was TOTALLY entertained. Love it!"
The film also garnered perfect ratings from some, with one admirer exclaiming: "Absolutely amazing. Unique magic tricks and a new form of heists involving entertaining suspense. 10/10. I loved it.
"Loved it! Perfect cat and mouse movie leaving you guessing the entire time," chimed in another.
The movie's twists were a highlight for many, as one fan remarked: "A thrilling movie that keeps you guessing at every single turn on what the Four Horsemen might do and why they do it."
The enthusiasm continued with another fan praising: "Absolutely loved the movie, very clever, twists and turns, great acting and actors I love! I will watch this many times!"
"This is one of my favorite movies to watch. I love the twist and how they use their shows to present it to you," penned another, with one more agreeing: "One of my favourite movies."
A particularly thoughtful review noted: "The magic isn't just confined to the vocation of the main characters in this complex and charismatic 2013 crowd-pleaser."
Another person encapsulated their view of the movie, stating: "Now You See Me delivers a fast-paced, stylish thrill ride that blends the intrigue of a heist film with the spectacle of stage magic."
Yet, not all feedback was glowing, as one critic aired their grievances, writing: "Boring, predictable, and the ending draws on for nearly 30 minutes."
A different viewer expressed disappointment, adding: "Not my cup of tea. Plenty of good performers here, but overall it seemed weak and not as spectacular as it could've been. The ending plot twist seemed a little dry and not as breath grasping as it could've been."
Offering a more nuanced take, another cinephile mused: "I realise this movie has its flaws...it's a bit precious, the characters are a bit cartoonish, and the plot is contrived and strains the imagination. That being said, it's one of my favourite comfort films, as it requires nothing but suspension of disbelief and a willingness to be entertained without any further expectations."
Now You See Me and Now You See Me 2 are available to watch on Paramount Plus from Saturday, July 26.
