Andrew 'Beef' Johnston knows all about tough times in professional golf, but one of his biggest challenges has come off the course. The Englishman has endured a harrowing drop in form in recent years and now lies outside the world's top 450 players, but remains a hugely popular player thanks to his charisma and upbeat personality - evident from an hilarious drinking session he had with John Daly.
Johnston burst on the scene in 2016 with his first professional win at the Open de Espana. That same year, he finished tied for 16th at the , and a big future seemed in store for the Barnet-based star. However, a combination of injuries and form has since derailed the star, although he remains a well-known personality in the game.
Therefore, a first meeting with the charismatic Daly was unlikely to end quietly. The pair got together following the final round at the Turkish Airlines Open, where a quick beer turned into a memorable night, or maybe in Johnston's case, a forgettable one.
In 2024, the Englishman gave an interview to the DP World Tour, in which he explained how 'Wild Thing' scrapped an order of just two drinks in favour of a 'bucket' of beers, followed by whisky. Johnston then recalled an invitation back to the hotel to continue the session.
"I remember sitting there and he ordered like two large whiskeys," Johnston said. "And he's got the can of Coke on the side. As the waiter put them down, he went, 'Can we order two more?'"
Johnston pointed out in vain that he was struggling with the pace at which Daly, who battled alcoholism during the peak of his career, was ordering rounds. Soon, the consequences for the 36-year-old were telling.
"Next thing, I'm in my pants, and I'm shaking a tree, and then I'm jumping in the pool. And I woke up and I was like 'what happened?' And my missus at the time was like, 'yea, you stripped down to your pants, and you were shaking this bush for some reason, and you kinda jumped in the pool.'"
However, Daly, 59, was barely affected by his beer and spirits intake. According to Johnston, having made sure his new drinking partner was alright, he walked back to his hotel room without fuss.
