Tributes have been paid to a "wonderful" couple who died when floods swept them away as they hiked in Majorca.

Sarah Jane Thompson, 26, and boyfriend Alexander Barrett, 32, vanished while walking through the Tramuntana mountain range.

The following day, volunteers recovered Sarah's body but the search continued for climbing instructor Alex, who was last seen desperately trying to save her from a sudden torrent of water.

But days later a police confirmed that the body of a man who matched Alex's description had been found.

Alex worked as an instructor at Stockport rock climbing gym Awesome Walls, while Sarah, of Levenshulme, Greater Manchester, had been a member of staff at The Good Rebel bar in Stockport.

In a post online, Awesome Walls said: "Alex was known for his warm smile, kind nature and endless 'psych' in all aspects of life. Whether it was in climbing or not, he was always keen to celebrate people's achievements with a fist bump and a good laugh.

"Sarah was an Awesome Walls regular and a welcome sight to all who she crossed paths with. She was kind, joyful and would regularly make friends with people during sessions."

Awesome Walls said a tribute to Alex will be placed at its site, adding: "We do not want to forget these two wonderful people.

The Good Rebel bar said: "Sarah was and still is a very big part of The Good Rebel. She was the kindest and happiest person you could ever meet and could rock a pair of dungarees like no other. We love and miss you Sarah." A memorial to the couple is being set up by grieving friends and family in Woodbank and Vernon Park in Stockport.
