Shoppers love candle that 'sounds and smells like a crackling fireplace' for cosy nights

As the evenings begin to draw in, there's something about lighting a candle that transforms a room from a bland space into something warm, cosy, and inviting.

With so many to choose from, picking one that suits your home can feel overwhelming but this WoodWick Fireside Ellipse candle offers more than just a nice smell and a flame. It has a wooden wick, which crackles as it burns, and shoppers say the overall effect gives the feel of an open fireplace, "without the mess".

Available from a number of retailers including Marks & Spencer at £34.99, it's currently £30.99 at Boots. Owned by lifestyle giants Yankee Candle, the Woodwick candle is also on sale from the brand's own website at full price.

The packaging is sleek: the light grey coloured candle comes in an oval glass vessel with a wooden lid, which will look smart on a coffee table. The fragrance notes are bergamot and apple peel at the top; golden amber and black oak in the middle; and a base of smoked mahogany, vetiver, and musk. According to the brand, the goal is to evoke the feel of a warm fire with fragrant woods and a gentle glow.

The wax is a blend of soy and paraffin and the burn time is stated as 50 hours. Shoppers say they love the sound and feel of the candle. One customer wrote on M&S said: "Experience a fireplace without the work and mess! Sounds and smells like a crackling fireplace. My husband is hooked."

Another who purchased from the brand direct, wrote: "It's like a mini fireplace. The smell is wonderful as well, almost like you're beside a real fire. The crackling and the flame are so soothing. It also adds such a cosy feel to my bedroom."

And a third happy shopper added: "Subtle fragrance, long burn time. The crackle effect is very soothing. Elegant container too."

However, not everyone is completely happy. One negative review mentioned: "Colour is surprisingly dull and scent feels weaker than expected for a 'Fireside' name-less smoky, more sweet woods, not quite what I expected."

Despite that, average ratings are high. On the M&S and WoodWick sites the Fireside Ellipse has 4.8 stars out of five from customers, while Boots customers have given it 4.7 stars out of five.
