The UK's 10 largest churches - number 1 isn't Westminster Abbey or St Paul's Cathedral

These in the UK are some of the most beautiful works of architecture the UK has to offer.

There are more than 38,500 churches across the UK which feature fascinating mediaeval architecture.

Some have been standing for centuries and are home to incredible history.

and St Paul's Cathedral are two of the most famous and are often used by the royals for special occasions or festive engagements.

But neither of these two makes the top spot on this list.

The largest in the UK is Liverpool Cathedral - construction began in 1904 and was completed in 1978. It features Gothic-style architecture and is also the sixth largest in the world in terms of floor area.

Impressively, the cathedral's tower is the highest in the world, with a height of 101 metres. From the observation gallery, you will be able to see breathtaking views of the city and the River Mersey.

"Down in the lower passages by the conference area old pictures are displayed, some showing the cathedral being built, an amazing insight into years past. There is a cafe and gift shop - a beautiful place to see."

In second place is the famous . As one of London's most iconic sights, it's no wonder this iconic building makes runner-up.

At around 7,434 square metres, the floor area of St. Paul's Cathedral makes it the second largest in the UK. Its beautiful dome, standing at 111 metres high, was the largest in the world until the 20th century.

In third place is York Minster which was completed in 1472 after many years of construction. The building is an iconic landmark in the area and is known for its beautiful architecture - it covers an impressive 6,500 square metres.

Fourth place is held by Salisbury Cathedral which might come as a surprise. A well known landmark in the area, the building covers an area of about 6,080 square metres. It is one of the best preserved cathedrals of its kind.

In fifth place is - the famous building has hosted many royal events over the years and is known for its grandeur.

Filling up the rest of the top 10 are Canterbury Cathedral, Winchester Cathedral, Durham Cathedral, St. Giles' Cathedral and Bristol Cathedral.
