loanee Bryan Gil has effectively confirmed that he will try and leave the club this summer. The 24-year-old is facing an uncertain future after coming down with an injury in the final weeks of his season-long stint with side Girona.
Gil has impressed on his loan spell in Spain, scoring three league goals and registering three assists as a regular fixture in the starting XI. That kind of form is a far cry from the 24 goalless appearances he has managed in the four years since landing in north London. And the Spanish international is now ready to cut his losses.
When asked about where his future lies, Gil told : "I haven't given it much thought because I'm focused on recovering as best as possible and being back.
"That's something my agent will tell me where things are going, but they told me, and I told them, that the best thing is for us not to continue being linked to Tottenham."
Gil was a hyped-up Spurs signing in the summer of 2021, when it took plus Erik Lamela to lure him away from boyhood club Sevilla. But he struggled to cope with the physical demands of English football and failed to find the net in 43 appearances across all competitions.
Girona reportedly have a to make Gil's loan move permanent this summer. But his ongoing knee injury, and the fact he only has one year remaining on his Spurs contract, is believed to have convinced them that a lower fee can be negotiated.
Although Gil's spell with Spurs looks set to end with a whimper, the winger insists that everyone will remain on good terms. "There's no problem or bad feeling, quite the opposite," he explained. "They bet on me when I was young, and they've treated me fairly well, but if I have to go back there, I'll focus on giving my best as always.
"I'm calm because no one can have a bad word to say about me not being professional, without playing. I've always trained well, I've done what I had to do, so whatever has to happen, will happen. We'll see where we are next year."
Gil's impressive displays for Girona saw him return to the international fold in November for the first time in four years. And he repaid Spanish national team bosses with a goal-scoring appearance against Switzerland.
