Experts and life hackers have revealed the surprise reason you should consider putting orange peels in your kitchen sink. The kitchen is perhaps one of the most labour-intensive rooms when it comes to cleaning. After all, that is where we keep, prepare, cook and eat our food. So it is not surprising that it takes quite a lot of upkeep to keep it clean. With so much food preparation going on, it is easy for kitchens to gain unwanted smells. Sometimes, no matter how much you clean, these smells remain and cause quite an annoyance for households.
But there is a simple solution that you might have never heard of. And it involves something that you might already have in your fridge or kitchen cupboard. Experts have shared the surprise reason why they put orange peels in their kitchen sinks. Citrus fruits aren't only good for our health. They can also be very useful cleaning agents, as many people have come to learn when cleaning their bathrooms, for example.
Not only does citrus help to clean things, but it also has a lovely smell. That's why citrus-scented candles are a popular thing to have in UK households, to help them smell fresh.
But you can go directly to the source for this. Kitchen experts at Mill recommend this technique. Orange peels can leave a lovely, lingering smell. By placing some just above or within your kitchen drain, you can help cover up unwanted smells that come from it.
When we wash our dishes, leftovers can fall down our sinks, and they can give off an unwelcome smell. However, orange peels help with this. Going one step further, you can freeze them to help get rid of the bad smells altogether.
The experts explain: "Chop up a few orange peels and distribute them evenly across an ice cube tray. Then, cover with water and freeze.
"The next time you need to deodorise your disposal, just put a cube or two down there and turn it on. The ice will help break off any stuck gunk, and the peels will leave behind a fresh orange scent."
Another expert recommended filling your sink with hot water and placing the orange peels in it. The juices will diffuse into the water and help to create a lovely smell that will last some time.
