Hundreds more prisoners are being released early today by Sir Keir Starmer as the Labour Government mulls letting inmates serve sentences at home.

The Labour Government is pushing ahead with plans to grant early release to around 1,000 prisoners, despite calls for cancellation and concerns for public safety.

The early release scheme allows people serving sentences for less serious crimes to leave prison after serving 40 percent of their sentences. It does not apply to prisoners serving sentences for certain offenses, including sex offenses, serious violent offenses, domestic abuse, terrorism, and national security offenses.

Former home secretary Dame Priti Patel called for the Ministry of Justice to suspend the scheme following reports that those already released were reoffending and a lack of data on reoffending rates, prison recalls and support for victims.

Meanwhile, the Labour Government has announced a review which could see inmates undergoing some form of house arrest to ease pressure on prison numbers.

Express.co.uk is at HMP Wandsworth this morning speaking to those inmates who have been released.
