Expert-Backed Tips To Avoid Acne On Sensitive Skin Amidst Navratri Makeup

Send Push

Navratri is here and it is a time of celebration, with vibrant outfits, elaborate makeup, and dandiya nights. However, for people with sensitive skin, the excitement can be dampened by the fear of breakouts and irritation caused by daily festive makeup. Heavy layers of foundation, bright colours, and glittery eyeshadows can clog pores and cause skin flare-ups, which can last long after the festivities are over. To make things easy for people with sensitive skin, who also want to enjoy makeup without the worry of breakouts, we spoke with Dr Monica Kapoor, a celebrity cosmetologist and director of Flawless Cosmetic Clinic and ILACAD Institute. Follow these expert-backed skincare and makeup tips to protect your skinStart with Clean SkinBefore applying makeup, ensure your skin is thoroughly cleansed and prepped. Use a gentle cleanser designed for sensitive skin, preferably one without harsh chemicals, fragrances, or alcohol. "This will help to remove dirt and excess oil without stripping your skin’s natural moisture." Dr Kapoor says. Hydration is KeyMoisturising is essential, especially for sensitive skin. A lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturiser will provide a protective barrier between your skin and makeup, reducing the risk of irritation. Dr Kapoor says go for moisturisers that contain ingredients like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and aloe vera, which are gentle on the skin and help retain moisture.Prime for ProtectionA good primer can be a game changer when it comes to protecting your skin. Primers not only help makeup last longer but also create a barrier between your skin and makeup products. Dr Kapoor advises people with sensitive skin to choose silicone-based or hydrating primers that smooth over any dryness or irritation, providing a smooth surface for makeup application.Choose Makeup Products WiselyWhen choosing makeup, pick products labeled as non-comedogenic, hypoallergenic, and dermatologist-tested. "These are formulated to minimise the risk of clogging pores and causing breakouts. Mineral-based makeup is also a great option as it is gentle and less likely to irritate sensitive skin," Dr Kapoor says. Avoid Heavy Layers of MakeupFestivals often call for glamorous looks, but layering too much product can suffocate your skin. Instead of piling on foundation, go for lightweight formulas like BB creams or tinted moisturisers, which give you coverage without overwhelming your skin. If you need more coverage, use concealer sparingly on problem areas.Be Mindful of Eye MakeupEyeshadows, eyeliners, and mascaras can sometimes cause allergic reactions or irritation. "Stick to eye makeup products that are ophthalmologist-tested, especially if you have sensitive eyes or wear contact lenses. Avoid glittery or metallic eyeshadows, which can be abrasive, and opt for cream-based shadows instead," Dr Kapoor says.Proper Removal Is CrucialAt the end of the day, it is vital to remove all traces of makeup to avoid clogging your pores. Dr Kapoor recommends using a gentle makeup remover or micellar water that is designed for sensitive skin. "Micellar water is particularly effective as it removes makeup, cleanses, and tones in one step without the need for harsh rubbing," Dr Kapoor says. Use Soothing Masks Post-MakeupAfter wearing makeup for a long day, it is a good idea to pamper your skin with a calming face mask. Look for masks that contain anti-inflammatory ingredients like oatmeal, chamomile, or aloe vera to reduce any irritation or redness.
