Navratri 2024 Day 8: Maa Mahagauri Is Worshipped With Coconut And Milk-Based Sweets

Dedicated to the nine forms of Goddess Durga, Navratri is widely celebrated across the country and October 11th, 2024, is the day eight of the festival. Also known as Ashtami, Maa Mahagauri, one of the most revered forms of Goddess Durga is worshipped by the devotees. She a said to be the symbol of purity, serenity, and compassion and the Goddess is believed to shower peace and prosperity upon people who worship her. Who Is Maa Mahagauri

Her name, "Maha" meaning great, and "Gauri" meaning white, which reflects her radiant beauty. She is often depicted with a white drape, seated on her sacred vehicle, a white bull. According to Hindu mythology, Maa Mahagauri symbolises a powerful transformation as it is said that Maa Kali transformed into Maa Mahagauri in order to defeat the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha. When Maa Kali bathed in the holy waters of the Ganga in the Himalayas, with the blessings of Lord Brahma, she emerged as Maa Mahagauri. This incarnation of Mahagauri later evolved into the fierce forms of Maa Kalika and Maa Chandi. Significance of Coconut And Milk-Based Sweets On this auspicious day, devotees offer coconut and milk-based sweets as prasad to Maa Mahagauri. These sweets, which are white in colour have the spiritual essence of the goddess and are believed to bring peace, fertility and prosperity into the lives of the devotees. One common offering is coconut ladoos or milk peda which are then shared with family and friends in the form of prasad.
