Ludhiana: Two employees of a private bus were Saturday booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder for allegedly beating a tractor driver, Manjit Singh, to death after an accident. One of them has been arrested.
The accused have been identified as Amarjit Singh and Roshan Lal, the driver and conductor of the bus, respectively.
DSP Samrala Tarlochan Singh said, "Roshan has been arrested, while Amarjit was injured and is admitted in hospital. The cause of Manjit's death can be ascertained only after the post-mortem."
Manjit (45) was reportedly taking his tractor trolley to his village, Bamba, when it collided with a bus coming from the other side Friday night. The accident occurred somewhere near Khatra village. Following the accident, Manjit's body was found in a mysterious condition at the site.
Soon, a police team led by SHO Samrala Pavitter Singh reached the spot. They took the body into custody and sent it to the govt hospital for a post-mortem.
Manjit's cousin, Sukhwinder Singh, told the police that Manjit survived the accident but was allegedly beaten to death by the accused in a fight that ensued.
Gursevak Singh, husband of the village sarpanch, too said people present at the spot said Manjit was not killed in the road accident, but was beaten to death in the fight that followed.
Gursevak said Manjit used to work in a sawdust factory in Bamba and would stay alone in the village. He has a son who is currently abroad.
The accused have been booked under sections 105 (homicide not amounting to murder), 324 (mischief), and 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way) of BNS at Samrala police station.
