18 kg of ambergris seized near Rasipuram; three arrested

NAMAKKAL: Forest department officials in Namakkal district arrested three men for illegally possessing 18 kg of ambergris (whale vomit) near Rasipuram.

Ambergris is a substance produced in the digestive system of sperm whales. It is utilized for medicinal applications and in the production of perfumes. One kg of ambergris is valued at several crores of rupees.

Forest department officials received a tip-off about smuggling of ambergris from the coastal region to Belukkurichi near Rasipuram.

They conducted a search at the residence of G Venkatesan, 54, in Belukkurichi.

"We found that ambergris was being hoarded and that negotiations over its price were taking place," stated a forest officer. B Abdul Jalil, 52, and S Ravi, 58, of Salem were involved in the smuggling operation.

The officials seized 18 kg of ambergris and two vehicles used in the operation.

They launched a search for two others, identified as Chandran of Kollihills and Ramkumar of Vazhapadi in Salem district, involved in the smuggling.

The arrested trio have been remanded in judicial custody.
