Shillong: The 16th convocation of IIM-Shillong was held on Friday, with chief minister Conrad K Sangma urging graduates to approach life as a marathon requiring perseverance, resilience, and commitment to their passions.

Sharing personal anecdotes, Sangma recalled the uncertainty he faced after graduation and setbacks in his early career, including his first electoral defeat. He emphasised how failure motivated him to achieve success, eventually becoming an MP, MLA, finance minister, and now chief minister. "The hardest decisions in life are often the most meaningful when you follow your heart," he said.

Highlighting Meghalaya's economic progress, Sangma noted the state's GDP growth from Rs 9,000 crores to over Rs 30,000 crores in three years, with investments tripling and government expenditure focused on high-impact sectors.

Reflecting on his academic journey at The Wharton School, Sangma shared how his research on governance and economic facilitation shaped policies he now implements as chief minister. He stressed the importance of entrepreneurship and creating an enabling ecosystem for economic growth.

Addressing the graduates, Sangma encouraged them to value the experiences and exposure gained at IIM-Shillong. "Never underestimate the conversations and learning from a premier institution," he said.

President of Honeywell India, Ashish Modi, chairman of the board of governors, Shishir Kumar Bajoria, and director DP Goyal also addressed the convocation.
