Kanpur: Devotees thronged ghats along the Ganga to take holy dip and performed religious rituals on Tuesday on the occasion of Dev Uthani Ekadashi.

The day, also known as Prabodhini Ekadashi, is observed in the Hindu month of Kartik. It marks the awakening of Lord Vishnu from four-month-long Yog Nidra and the beginning of auspicious days for marriages and other sacred rituals.

Several devotees observe day-long fast, perform special rituals and offer prayers to Lord Vishnu on this day. Devotees also perform rituals of Tulsi Vivah and offer prayers to Tulsi and Shaligram (symbolic form of Lord Vishnu). The rituals are performed under the gooseberry (amla) tree. Devotees offer sweet potato, sugarcane and water chestnuts to the deities and seek blessings for their family and for a new beginning.
