Kanpur: Police rescued a five-year-old girl who was abducted from Beconganj market during Eid celebrations on April 1, and arrested the kidnapper, who admitted to the crime, citing her inability to conceive after a decade of marriage.

The investigation, conducted under Operation Trinetra, involved analysing footage from 450 CCTV cameras. The incident occurred when a woman was shopping with her daughter and son. A burqa-clad woman abducted her daughterafter which the family lodged a report of the incident.

The police traced the suspect through CCTV footage, following her distinctive bag. Despite the absence of cameras at some places, the police located the child at the kidnapper's parental home in Unnao, using photographs. The police thenarrested the accused woman.

Inspector of Baconganj police station Mateen Khan confirmed the kidnapper's arrest and the child's safe return to her family. The emotional reunion saw the child running to her parents, who expressed their gratitude by garlanding the police officers.

The DCP recognised the investigating team's efforts with a reward. The inspector said the kidnapper attempted to conceal the child's identity by shaving her head, which initially puzzled the police upon arrival in Unnao.

During the seven-day ordeal, the kidnapper tried to placate the child with new clothes, chocolates, biscuits, and ice cream.
