4 things we should take extra care of while drinking water from an earthen pot

Send Push

With the rising summer heat, staying hydrated is more important than ever. While refrigerators offer instant cooling, traditional earthen pots, or matkas, provide naturally cool and refreshing water without any electricity. Plus, they add a touch of natural minerals that make the water healthier. But as beneficial as drinking from an earthen pot is, there are a few things we must take care of to ensure hygiene, longevity, and the best experience. Here are 4 important things to keep in mind when drinking water from a matka.

Always clean the pot before use

When you buy a new matka, it’s essential to clean it thoroughly before using it for the first time. Earthen pots are porous, meaning they can absorb dust, chemicals, or even bacteria during storage and transport.

How to clean it properly?

  • Soak the pot in clean water for a few hours to remove any loose particles.
  • Scrub it gently with a soft brush or coconut husk using warm water. Avoid using soap, as clay can absorb it.
  • Rinse multiple times to ensure no residue is left.
  • Even after regular use, wash your pot at least once a week to prevent algae or dirt buildup inside.

Use a covered pot to keep water hygienic

Earthen pots have small pores that allow air to pass through, which keeps the water cool. However, these same pores can also allow dust, insects, or bacteria to enter. Leaving the pot uncovered increases the risk of contamination.

    What to do?

  • Always cover the pot with a proper lid—preferably a clay or wooden one—to prevent dust and flies from getting inside.
  • If using a cloth cover, make sure it's clean and changed regularly.
  • Place the matka in a clean and cool area, away from direct sunlight and pollution.

    Change the water regularly

Unlike a sealed water bottle or a fridge container, water in an earthen pot can become stale if left for too long. Since the pot remains damp, it creates an ideal environment for bacteria if the water is not changed frequently.

    Best practice:

  • Always empty the pot and refill it with fresh water every 24 hours to maintain cleanliness.
  • If the water level is low, avoid refilling without rinsing the pot first.
  • During monsoons or humid seasons, clean the pot more frequently to avoid mold formation.

Avoid placing the pot directly on the ground

Keeping the matka directly on the floor can make it prone to contamination and breakage. Clay is delicate, and an uneven surface can cause cracks. Plus, water stored at ground level may absorb dirt and bacteria from the floor.

    How to store it correctly?

  • Place the pot on a wooden, plastic, or metal stand to keep it stable.
  • If a stand isn’t available, keep it on a clean cloth or coaster to prevent direct contact with the ground.
  • Keep it in a well-ventilated area, but avoid extreme heat or direct sunlight, as this can cause faster evaporation and drying out of the pot.
