Patricio Pitbull’s departure from PFL was announced on January 15, 2025, through an announcement by Donn Davis on the social media platform X. Shortly after, the fighter was signed by UFC and has his next bout scheduled against Yair Rodriguez at UFC 314. While Pitbull in his recent interviews seems to be confident about his journey in the UFC, PFL broadcaster Sean O’Connell in the recent episode of the Ariel Helwani Show seemed to be quite unsure about the fighter’s journey being bigger and better in the UFC than in the PFL.
Sean O’Connell explains PFL’s stance on former fighters creating unrest affecting the image of the promotionIn the recent episode of the Ariel Helwani Show, PFL broadcaster Sean O’Connell was asked about the promotion’s stand in cases where former PFL fighters create a sense of unrest in terms of the company’s image. To this, O’Connell replied, “I know what it's like to wonder about your future and I know what it's like to want to maximize your paydays.” He stated while considering the perspective of the fighters, “This is their whole life. They don't have a plan B. The narrative that is pushed by fighters, in a lot of cases on social media, it completely loses sight of the company's side of things.”
O’Connell further added, “The fact that we've done things a certain way for a very long time and that it's always been the case with the PFL.”
Patricio Pitbull’s release from the promotion was not free of any controversy or unrest. The fighter talked about the company’s situation across interviews and the social media. Reflecting on this incident, O’Connell stated, “I was ultimately proud of how the Pitbull situation was handled. He wanted out. He didn’t want to continue to fight under the PFL banner, and he’s a guy that made a big stink on social media. If you think you can achieve something better somewhere else and make more money somewhere else, go ahead and try.”
While O’Connell acknowledged the fighter’s will to go higher up the ladder, he also believed that Pitbull’s journey within the UFC would not be much different than in the PFL.
“I wish him well. I’m a big fan of his fighting style, but I don’t think he’s going to do more or better in the UFC than he did under the Bellator banner or with the PFL. So, we’ll just let time tell”

Pitbull’s release from the promotion was quite a bitter one and maybe that feeling still persists due to the freshness of the incident. With two contrasting emotions, one of the fighter’s confidence regarding his journey in the UFC and the other one of the PFL promoter’s doubt about the journey being distinguishably different and remarkable, indeed only time will tell how the featherweight fighter marks his journey.
