German software giant SAP is doubling down on its investment in India, with plans to significantly expand its workforce in the country, a report has said. Company CEO Christian Klein has announced that India is poised to become SAP's largest employee hub, and may surpass even its headquarters in Germany.
“We will over proportionally hire here [India] versus all the other labs,” said Klein during a visit to Bengaluru with the company's executive and supervisory boards, as per news agency Reuters, which added that India will soon house the company’s biggest workforce, overtaking the headcount at company HQ.
SAP Labs has 15,000 employees in India
SAP Labs India currently boasts 15,000 employees, making it the company's largest engineering centre globally and its second-largest office overall. Klein emphasised India's importance to SAP, highlighting its position as one of the company's top 10 revenue generators and its fastest-growing market.
He further revealed that a majority of future investments in research and development (R&D) and customer success initiatives will be directed towards India, however, Klein did not provide specific figures or timelines for hiring.
The company is currently constructing a second office in Bengaluru, designed to accommodate an additional 15,000 employees.
Klein on India’s role in AI
Klein also highlighted India's role in SAP's AI strategy, saying that the company's main AI team is based in India, and a growing number of development teams are led by individuals in the country.
Addressing concerns about potential job losses due to the rise of generative AI (GenAI), Klein reassured employees that SAP will continue to hire as long as the business maintains its growth trajectory.
"As your business is growing 30% each year, you will also need more developers, not proportionally, under proportionally, but we have a growing business," he stated.
