Elon Musk has launched a fierce online offensive against White House trade advisor Peter Navarro, escalating a public feud fueled by disagreements over the Trump administration’s tariff policies. The billionaire’s sharp attack comes via multiple posts on X as he defends Tesla 's manufacturing practices.
Musk, a prominent Trump campaign donor, took to his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), to express his disdain for Navarro, who claimed that the Tesla CEO is a car “assembler” rather than a manufacturer, emphasising Tesla's reliance on foreign-sourced components.
Musk shared data shared by Cars.com’s official American-Made Index, which showed that the top 4 most American-made cars are all Teslas: Model Y, Model 3, Model X and Model S.
“Tesla has the most American-made cars. Navarro is dumber than a sack of bricks," Musk wrote in one post. He also dubbed Peter Navarro as “Peter Retarrdo”.
In a followup post, Musk stated, “Navarro is truly a moron. What he says here is demonstrably false.”
He further mounted his attack in a separate post, saying, “By any definition whatsoever, Tesla is the most vertically integrated auto manufacturer in America with the highest percentage of US content. Navarro should ask the fake expert he invented, Ron Vara.”
How Musk’s online spat with Peter Navarro began
The online spat escalated further when Musk, in a now-deleted X post, asserted that Navarro "ain't built s—”, as per CNBC.
He also questioned Navarro's academic credentials, writing, “A PhD in Econ from Harvard is a bad thing, not a good thing.”
Musk's public criticism of Navarro is particularly noteworthy given his current role as head of the White House's "Department of Government Efficiency" (DOGE) initiative, a position appointed by President Trump. Musk has recently voiced support for free-trade policies.
