NEW DELHI: BJP on Friday said the Centre will put forth its stand on the issue of Aligarh Muslim University's minority status when a new bench of Supreme Court takes up the matter for hearing.
The party reacted after SC said the question of AMU's minority status would be decided by a new bench.
"The central govt, which is a party, will put forward its case very strongly. Supreme Court, whose primary duty is to interpret the provisions of the Constitution, will do so," BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said at a press conference. He added that BJP was a party that believed in the Constitution.
BJP's IT department head Amit Malviya posted on X remarks of some political "stalwarts" who had opposed grant of minority tag to AMU during debates in Parliament in 1972.
"Here is a look at what some of the stalwarts had to say, during parliamentary debates, opposing granting of minority tag to AMU," he wrote on X, posting remarks of former education minister S Nural Hasan, then DMK MP C T Dhandapani and then Congress MP from Baramulla Syed Ahmed Aga.
