NEW DELHI: Several parts of Delhi witnessed a sudden change in weather on Saturday evening, as rain showers brought much-needed relief from the extreme heat.
Areas such as RK Puram, Dhaula Kuan and Delhi Cantt experienced massive downpour, with thick clouds covering the sky. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert and predicted rainfall from Friday to Monday.
Earlier, the IMD had forecasted that the monsoon is advancing towards the National Capital Region (NCR), and Delhi is likely to witness the onset of the southwest monsoon by June 24.
This week on Tuesday, heavy rainfall lashed several parts of Delhi. It caused the diversion of 12 flights at Delhi airport due to adverse weather conditions.
Last year, the monsoon arrived in Delhi on June 25 with the highest single-day precipitation since 1936 of 228.1mm. The season, however, ended with a 19 per cent deficiency. Rainfall up to 19 per cent excess or deficient is considered normal. The city logged 516.9mm of rainfall, around half of monsoon 2023.
