'In touch with relevant agencies': MEA issues statement after death of Indian embassy official in Washington DC

The ministry of external affairs (MEA) on Saturday confirmed the death of an Indian Embassy official in Washington DC under mysterious circumstances . The official was found dead on the evening of September 18, 2024, within the premises of the embassy.

In a statement, the MEA expressed deep regret, saying, “With deep regret, we wish to confirm that a member of the Embassy of India passed away in the evening of 18th September 2024. We are in touch with all relevant agencies and members of the family to ensure the swift transfer of the mortal remains to India.”

The incident was made public on Friday, with officials saying that the official's body was discovered under mysterious circumstances. The death, which occurred on Wednesday, is currently under investigation by local law enforcement and the U.S. Secret Service. According to reports from news agency PTI, the probe is exploring multiple possibilities, including the potential of suicide.

The embassy had not disclosed further details about the deceased, respecting the family’s privacy. "Additional details regarding the deceased are not being released out of concern for the family's privacy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family in this time of grief,” the statement added.

At this stage, no definitive conclusions have been reached, and the investigation remains ongoing. Officials are working closely with the Indian authorities to ensure the deceased’s remains are transported back to India as swiftly as possible.
