BENGALURU: Moderate to heavy rain that lashed Bengaluru on Tuesday flooded at least 150 houses in various localities, caused waterlogging in several arterial roads, threw traffic out of gear, and disrupted normal daily life in Karnataka 's capital.
Urban deputy commissioner G Jagadeesha has announced city's schools will remain closed on Wednesday. Thursday is a govt holiday for Valmiki Jayanti . The announcement follows IMD 's orange alert for Bengaluru on Wednesday and Thursday.
On Tuesday, Bengaluru recorded 6cm rainfall between 8.30am and 5.30pm, which was only 33% of the all-time record (179mm) received in 24 hours on Oct 1, 1997, according to IMD. Eastern parts of the city (HAL) received 8cm rainfall.
IMD scientists attributed the substantial day-long showers to the prevailing low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, off the coast of northern Tamil Nadu, and cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal, off the coast of Andhra Pradesh. This apart, easterly and north-easterly winds have set in over the southern peninsular region, marking the onset of retreating monsoon.
Over the next five days, Bengaluru is expected to witness a maximum temperature of 20 C. tnn
