A man died after being sucked into the engine of a plane on the taxiway at the Milan Bergamo Airport in Italy, according to a report by the Independent.
The person, believed to be around 35-years-old, reportedly “entered the wrong way near the terminal, abandoned his car and started running inside.” After gaining access to the arrivals area on the ground floor, he opened a security door leading directly to the aircraft parking zones.
“Once he had entered the arrivals area - which is on the ground floor - he is said to have opened a security door that leads directly to the aircraft parking areas,” the Independent reported citing local media
The plane involved was a Volotea Airbus A319 bound for Asturias and was performing a “pushback” manoeuvre to leave the parking area, as reported by Italian media.
Flights were suspended from 10:20am to midday local time, with SACBO, the airport operator, stating: “Operations are suspended due to an aircraft grounded on the runway because of technical problems. Departing flights are delayed, and arrivals may be diverted or cancelled.”
The Italian authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
