A National Guard member was issued a traffic ticket on Wednesday after running a red light and colliding with a civilian vehicle in Washington, DC, officials said.
The incident occurred near Eastern Market at 8th Street SE and North Carolina Avenue early Wednesday morning, involving a DC National Guard transport vehicle, as per The Hill.
Emergency responders said the civilian driver was trapped in the car, requiring extrication tools to be freed, and was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, reported CBS News.
The convoy at the time included five National Guard vehicles and a DC Metropolitan Police Department cruiser, all of which stopped to assist the driver.
The Joint Task Force District of Columbia (JTF-DC) said in a Thursday statement that the priority was “ensuring the well-being of all involved.” Col Larry Doane, commander of JTF-DC, added, “We are grateful for the response of DC police and EMS. Safety is our top priority. We will take action based on the investigation. This type of vehicle is authorised, and safety protocols are in place”, according to The Hill.
The driver of the Guard vehicle received a red light ticket, which in DC carries a $150 fine.
The crash comes amid a broader deployment of National Guard forces in the capital, ordered earlier this month by US President Trump to address what he has described as an “epidemic of crime”.
Federalised Guard forces from DC and six GOP-led states, totalling just under 2,000 personnel as of Wednesday, are operating alongside local law enforcement. Some members are armed depending on the mission, according to JTF-DC.
Since the surge began on August 7, a White House official said 630 arrests have been made in DC, with Trump visiting a federal law enforcement facility in Anacostia on Thursday to praise the efforts. “It’s like a different place, different city… in a couple of weeks, it’s going to be far better,” Trump said.
The deployment has drawn criticism from local officials, who argue the presence of heavy military vehicles and armed personnel is unnecessary, pointing to a decline in violent crime over the past year-and-a-half despite Trump’s assertions, according to CBS News.
