Vice president hopeful JD Vance sharply criticised an anchor for downplaying the issue of violent gangs in American communities, following Donald Trump 's controversial claims about Venezuelan gangs taking over apartment complexes. Vance’s remarks came in response to a segment where ABC host Martha Raddatz suggested that the incidents were limited to "a handful of apartment complexes" and that the situation was being managed by local law enforcement.
Vance retorted, "Martha, do you hear yourself? Only a handful of apartment complexes in America were taken over by Venezuelan gangs. And Donald Trump is the problem and not Kamala Harris ? Americans are so fed up with what’s going on, and they have every right to be."
He went on to argue that the anchor seemed more focused on nitpicking Trump’s statements than acknowledging the real threat to American communities. "You seem to be more focused on nitpicking everything that Donald Trump has said rather than acknowledging that apartment complexes in the United States of America are being taken over by violent gangs," he said.
Vance’s defence of Trump’s rhetoric comes in the wake of a rally where Trump painted a bleak picture of the country’s immigration situation. Speaking in Aurora, Colorado, Trump claimed that the United States was being "occupied" by foreign criminals, a claim he amplified by referring to a viral video showing armed Latinos rampaging in an apartment building in Aurora. Trump used the incident to bolster his argument that immigration policies under the Biden-Harris administration had failed, leaving American communities vulnerable.
Local officials, including Aurora’s Republican mayor, dismissed Trump’s claims as exaggerated. The mayor clarified that while the incident did occur, it did not represent a larger trend of communities being overrun by gangs. Despite this, Trump’s rhetoric about violent immigrants has resonated with his base, with many concerned about crime and border security.
Vance supported Trump’s claims, blaming the current immigration crisis on Kamala Harris and her reversal of Trump’s border policies. "Kamala Harris’ 94 executive orders that undid Donald Trump’s successful border policies—we knew this stuff would happen. We can do so much better, but frankly, we’re not going to do better unless Donald Trump calls this stuff out," Vance added.
Trump’s immigration message has become a focal point in his 2024 campaign, with the former president proposing mass deportations under the Alien Enemies Act of 1798. He has also been vocal about what he sees as the failures of Harris and the Biden administration in managing the border crisis.
