Send Push

As large parts of India continue to grapple with sweltering heat and soaring temperatures, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a monsoon alert forecasting heavy rainfall in parts of South and Northeast India, while severe heatwaves are likely to persist across several northern and central states.

Heavy Rainfall Expected in Kerala, Mahe and Surrounding Areas

According to the IMD, heavy rainfall is expected in Kerala and Mahe on April 7, bringing a temporary respite from the rising heat in the region. Light showers are also forecasted in coastal Karnataka through April 8. Additionally, parts of East and Northeast India are expected to witness scattered rains between April 10 and April 12.

The forecast includes a hailstorm alert on April 9, which could impact crops and transportation across vulnerable regions. Hilly states such as Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad are also expected to receive light to moderate rain between April 9 and 10, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.

Severe Heatwave Conditions in Northern and Central India

While the southern states receive relief through monsoon showers, the northern belt is expected to face worsening heatwave conditions over the next few days:

  • Gujarat: Extreme heat expected in Saurashtra and Kutch regions through April 7.

  • Rajasthan: A severe heatwave is forecasted from April 7 to April 10, with temperatures expected to climb above 44°C.

  • Himachal Pradesh: High temperatures and dry conditions expected till April 7.

  • Haryana & Chandigarh: Hot winds and rising mercury levels through April 10.

  • Punjab, Delhi & West Uttar Pradesh: Severe heatwave conditions likely from April 7 to 9.

  • Madhya Pradesh: Warm and dry weather with heatwave alerts between April 8 and April 10.

Precautionary Measures for Residents
  • Avoid going outdoors during peak heat hours (12 PM to 4 PM).

  • Stay hydrated and wear light, breathable clothing.

  • Elderly, children, and people with chronic conditions are advised to remain indoors as much as possible.

  • Farmers and outdoor workers should remain alert, especially in regions expecting hailstorms and lightning.

Conclusion

India is experiencing a dramatic weather divide, with intense rainfall in the South and Northeast and severe heatwave conditions in the North and Central plains. The IMD continues to monitor evolving conditions, and residents are urged to follow local advisories to stay safe during this weather volatility.
